The Japanese royals have commemorated the atomic bombing of Hiroshima.
Prince Hisahito of Akishino, the only son of the Crown Prince and Crown Princess of Japan, placed flowers at a memorial for the victims at the Peace Memorial Park. It was the first time Prince Hisahito performed royal duties outside of Tokyo on his own.
Prince Hisahito also visited the Honkawa Elementary School Peace Museum. The museum is a preserved part of a school building which was hit by the bomb.
During a speech at the Nippon Scout Jamboree in the town of Jinseki-Kogen, the Prince also expressed his condolences for the victims of the recent earthquake in Kumamoto Prefecture in July. He then helped set up a tent and spoke with the participants.
The Prince will also be visiting the Hiroshima Prefectural Museum of History in Fukuyama on Saturday.
Emperor Naruhito, Empress Masako and Princess Aiko observed a moment of silence at the Imperial Palace on the anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima. The Emperor Emeritus and Empress Emerita also observed a moment of silence at their home.
The atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki took place on 6 and 9 August 1945, respectively. Thousands of civilians were killed, and shortly after, Japan surrendered to the Allies.
