Emperor Naruhito of Japan and the Imperial Family are in mourning after their beloved dog of 16 years passed away.

The female mixed-breed dog, named Yuri, died on 23 June 2025 at the age of 16 years and four months.

Emperor Naruhito, Empress Masako and Princess Aiko were all present when the dog died at the Imperial Residence. An aide told Japanese media that the family stayed by her side during her final moments.

Yuri is said to have died of old age.

Princess Aiko is said to be deeply saddened at the loss of Yuri, with whom she grew up. She often accompanied the Princess on her walks to elementary school.

Yuri was adopted as a rescue dog in the spring of 2009 and was named by the now Emperor and Empress’s only child, Princess Aiko, when she was seven.

The pup featured in many official family photos and events. She also served as a therapy dog at hospitals, reportedly until the COVID-19 pandemic.

A close aide to the Imperial Household made the announcement on 26 June.

They said that the Imperial Family wanted to express their gratitude to all those who supported and loved Yuri.
