Empress Masako of Japan has fed silkworms as part of a traditional event.
The tradition of sericulture has been passed down since the late 19th century. The Imperial Palace compound has a facility where silkworms are grown. She fed the domestic species called “koishimaru” mulberry leaves.
The silk produced in the facility will be used in gifts for foreign dignitaries.
