Emperor Naruhito of Japan has paid his respects to his great-aunt shortly after her body was returned home.
Yuriko, Princess Mikasa died earlier today in hospital at the age of 1o1. A few hours after her death, a hearse brought the Princess back to her residence.
Emperor Naruhito and his wife, Empress Masako, left the Imperial Palace around noon to pay their respects. They are said to be deeply saddened to receive the news of her passing through an aide. The Emperor has cancelled his official duties today.
It is expected that other members of the imperial family will also come by to pay their respects.
Yasuhiko Nishimura, Grand Master of the Imperial Household Agency, commented, “I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Princess Mikasa Yuriko. I would like to express my deepest condolences and my sincere gratitude for her achievements to date.”
The funeral will be held per Imperial traditions, and the Imperial Household Agency is currently deciding on the date.
