Emperor Emeritus Akihito of Japan has been released from the hospital after receiving a diagnosis.

He returned to his home at Sento Imperial Palace after four days at the University of Tokyo Hospital. He underwent testing during his stay and was diagnosed with asymptomatic myocardial ischemia. He will be receiving new medication and will have to avoid excessive exercise. In someone with the condition, blood flow from the coronary arteries to the heart muscle becomes insufficient when a certain level of exercise is reached. He has no symptoms.

He will also receive extra monitoring from doctors.

This is not the Emperor’s first problem with his heart. He underwent coronary artery bypass surgery in 2012  and was diagnosed with another heart disease in 2022.

His wife, Empress Emerita Michiko, visited him every day during his four-day stay in the hospital.
