Crown Prince Akishino of Japan will attend a memorial mass for Pope Francis.
The Imperial Household Agency announced that the Crown Prince will attend the mass at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Tokyo on behalf of the Emperor. The memorial mass will take place on the day of Pope Francis’s funeral, April 27.
The Emperor and Empress will send wreaths to the memorial massnbut they will not attend.
Crown Prince Akishino and his wife, Crown Princess Kiko, visited Italy in 2016 and had an audience with Pope Francis.
Pope Francis visited Japan in 2019 and had a discussion with the Emperor at the Imperial Palace.
