Crown Prince Haakon of Norway has had to cancel a portion of his official visit to Japan due to Crown Princess Mette-Marit’s health.
An official visit to Japan by Crown Prince Haakon of Norway was previously announced for early June. While a full programme was scheduled to be announced in due course, the Royal Court has today announced that one day of the visit will be cancelled due to Crown Princess Mette-Marit’s health situation.
Crown Prince Haakon will be in Tokyo from the 1st to the 3rd of June. While in the city, His Royal Highness will be received by Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako for a dinner during his stay. The Crown Prince will also hold an audience with Crown Prince Akishino and Crown Princess Kiko.
The Crown Prince recently stated during an engagement that he was “worried” for his wife, saying she was “seriously ill”, adding, “I think she has gotten a bit worse lately. It’s up to the doctors; it’s a medical question. So they’re the ones who decide when it should happen, when it’s right. But I think she’s gotten a lot worse lately, unfortunately,” Haakon continued.
According to journalist and reporter Brittani Barger, Crown Princess Mette-Marit was previously diagnosed with chronic pulmonary fibrosis in 2018 and “began limiting her royal duties to focus on her health. In December 2025, the Royal Palace announced that her condition had progressed to the point where a lung transplant would likely be needed. By March 2026, her condition had continued to worsen, and she was being reviewed for a transplant.”
