As we end the year 2025, let’s take a look back at the biggest royal news stories.

Princess of Wales reveals she is in remission

The year started off with the good news that the Princess of Wales is in remission from cancer. She was able to do more engagements and gradually returned to the limelight.

Queen Sonja has pacemaker surgery

A stressful time in Norway when Queen Sonja underwent surgery to have a pacemaker inserted. The surgery went well.

Birth of Princess Ines

In February, Princess Sofia of Sweden gave birth to her fourth child and first daughter, who eventually received the name Ines.

Death of Pope Francis

In April, the devastating news arrived that Pope Francis had died. He had been ill for several weeks and had shortly before his death received a visit from King Charles and Queen Camilla.

Inauguration of Pope Leo

In a rather swift election, Robert Francis Prevost was elected as Pope Leo XIV. Several royals would later attend his inauguration.

Saudi Prince dies after 20 years in a coma

Prince Alwaleed bin Khaled, known as the Sleeping Prince, died 20 years after a car accident left him with devastating injuries. He was 36 years old at the time of his death.

Indictment against Crown Princess Mette-Marit’s son, Marius Borg Høiby, presented

The Oslo State Attorney’s Office presented all 23 indictments against Crown Princess Mette-Marit’s son, Marius Borg Høiby. He will be prosecuted for 23 counts. This includes four rapes of four different women and abuse in a close relationship concerning his former partner, Nora Haukland. He will also be charged with making death threats, assaulting a public official and violating the Road Traffic Act.

Wedding of Princess Marie Caroline

At the end of August, the wedding of Princess Marie Caroline, the only daughter of Alois, Hereditary Prince of Liechtenstein, took place. While the wedding was private, the Liechtenstein court treated us to some wonderful photos.

Death of the Duchess of Kent

In September, an icon of the British royal family died. The Duchess of Kent died at the age of 92.

Prince Laurent reveals secret son

Belgium’s Prince Laurent has admitted to fathering a son 25 years ago, prior to his marriage to Princess Claire. The younger brother of King Philippe confirmed that he is the father of 25-year-old Clement Vandenkerckhove

Abdication of Grand Duke Henri

In October, Grand Duke Henri abdicated and passed the torch to his eldest son, who succeeded him as Grand Duke Gauillaume V.

We lost another icon in October when Queen Sirikit of Thailand passed away at the age of 93.

King Charles issues Letters Patent to remove Andrew’s princely title

While the process to remove the former Prince Andrew’s Duke of York title is a bit more complicated, King Charles issued Letters Patent removing the title of Prince and the style of HRH from his younger brother. To officially take the Duke of York title, an Act of Parliament is required, but the former Prince has said he wouldn’t use his title.

Crown Princess Mette-Marit in need of lung transplant

Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway will soon be in need of a lung transplant, the royal court has announced. The Crown Princess was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis in 2018, which causes scarring in the lungs. Recent tests have shown that the Crown Princess’s lungs are deteriorating.
