The ritual sacrifice was done at the Royal Palace in Rabat after performing the Eid prayer at the Ahl Fès Mosque in the Mechouar. The ceremony was broadcast live on national television.
King Mohammed sacrificed two rams, slaughtering the first one himself. The second was slaughtered by the mosque’s imam. This follows the tradition of the Prophet Muhanmed.
Last year, the people of Morocco were asked not to perform the sacrifice due to difficult climate and economic conditions following years of drought.
Eid al-Adha, or Eid El Kebir, is an important occasion. Families traditionally buy a sheep or ram, perform the sacrifice after the Eid prayer, and then share the meat with neighbours and people in need.
