This formal banquet, one of the highest diplomatic gestures, was attended by Prince Hisahito for the first time. The second in line to the throne was being prepared for the occasion, per the Imperial Household Agency.
During the speeches before the dinner, the Emperor spoke of the “difficult times in the past” as well as noting his and Japan’s gratitude for the aid given by the Philippines following the Great East Japan Earthquake and the Noto Peninsula Earthquake. His Majesty also touched on the fact that the Philippines was the first “foreign land” he had ever set foot on while on a refuelling stop on the way to Australia in 1974.
President Marcos, in return, said in part,
Japan remains among the Philippines’ most valued partners in advancing development, security, infrastructure, agriculture, connectivity, and resilience, while we are proud to say that Filipinos in Japan contribute meaningfully to your society and economy.
The Imperial Family and Presidential Couple were joined by around 90 guests who were served ‘French dishes’ before Japanese starters. Toasts were given while the guests tucked into their beautifully presented plates.
This year, the two countries will celebrate the 70th anniversary of the normalisation of diplomatic relations between Japan and the Philippines. The state visit aimed to strengthen ties in the political sphere, align with stronger defence and security cooperation, and support economic partnerships.
