The Swedish Royal Family has a busy December with many celebrations, and with those celebrations come traditions the family follows.
Christmas celebrations begin on 13 December when Scandinavian countries mark St Lucia Day. Lately, the Royal Family has shared images of Princess Estelle dressed as Lucia to mark the holiday, and even Princess Madeleine marked the holiday while residing in the United States with her children.

A member of the Royal Family also always receives Christmas trees at the Royal Palace in Stockholm from students at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. The past two years have seen Queen Silvia receive the trees with her grandchildren, who then decorate the trees together. The tradition began in the 1960s.
A unique Swedish royal Christmas tradition belongs to Crown Princess Victoria and her family. Each year, they record a video at a different location in Sweden during December. Usually, the family is learning something related to the holidays – seeing The Nutcracker ballet, making candles, making cookies, etc. They always end their video wishing the public, “Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!”
It has become one of the most looked-forward-to events of the Swedish Royal Family.
Prince Carl Philip and his wife, Princess Sofia, have also created their own tradition. Every year, they attend the annual Christmas concert “Christmas in Vasastan” at Gustf Vasa Church in the capital. 2024 marked the tenth year the royals have attended the concert, where they are entertained by music, artists and actors.

The holidays are also a time for the family to celebrate Queen Silvia, whose birthday is on 23 December.
The Royal Family gathers together on Christmas Eve for private celebrations at Drottningholm Palace. The Crown Princess also appears on television to read a Christmas greeting to the public.
Of course, the children of King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia spend time over the holidays with their in-laws. Crown Princess Victoria and her family will spend time with Prince Daniel’s family in Ockelbo, while Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia will enjoy time with her family in Älvdalen.
The King also delivers his annual Christmas Day address in the afternoon. It is pre-recorded and airs on Swedish television and radio.
