Queen Silvia of Sweden has been awarded an American humanitarian award in New York.
The Queen of Sweden was presented with the Global Humanitarian Ellis Island Medal of Honour on Ellis Island.
The Ellis Island Honors Society presented the Queen with the award for “her lifelong commitment to humanitarian causes, in particular her work to protect vulnerable children through the World Childhood Foundation and the Mentor Foundation, her leadership in promoting dementia care through Silviahemmet, and her commitment to empowering young people and supporting people with disabilities worldwide.”
Queen Silvia accepted her award and said a few words to those assembled, focusing on children, abuse and technology’s threat.
The Queen also called for unity in protecting children. She said, in part, “I believe that when we come together with courage and compassion, real and lasting change is possible. Whether we are protecting the rights of children or supporting those living with dementia, each of us has a role to play.
“Let us act boldly guided by science, by ethics, and by the shared humanity that connects us all.”

The Princess wrote: “I was very proud to accompany my mother when she received the Global Humanitarian Ellis Island Medal of Honor this weekend. For all the work my mother has done globally with Childhood, Mentor and Silviahemmet – this was a very well deserved moment!”
The Global Humanitarian Ellis Island Medal of Honour is given to international leaders.
