Queen Margrethe II of Denmark is helping to create a new ballet for Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen.

She will work alongside Phillip Faber and Tobias Praetorius to stage a new adaption of Hans Christian Andersen’s Clumsy Hans at the Pantomime Theatre. The ballet will premiere on 22 June 2024.

Queen Margrethe said, “I have tried my hand at producing performances for the Pantomime Theatre before and have a good sense of what thrives on that intimate stage. I am looking forward to starting this process with the other talents behind the production. The tale of Clumsy Hans bursts with possibilities. He’s an irresistibly lovable character, offering us rich opportunities to explore on stage. I am hopeful it will turn into a humorous performance, and I am eager to see the tale unfold on stage.”

Tobias Praetorius said, “Being granted the opportunity to create a new fairytale ballet for the magical stage of the Pantomime Theatre in Tivoli Gardens is a huge privilege for me and a childhood dream come true. The creation of a new ballet is a team effort, and I am fortunate to be surrounded by the strongest artistic team with Phillip Faber as composer and Her Majesty Queen Margrethe as set and costume designer. Hans Christian Andersen was a genius at storytelling, and the beauty of ballet lies in its ability to translate emotions and characters through the magic of dance, music and theatre. My dream for this ballet is for Tivoli’s audiences to be drawn into Hans Christian Andersen’s beautiful and ‘clumsy’ fairytale universe, and hopefully, leave the theatre with a touch of fairytale enchantment.”
