Queen Letizia of Spain returned to her former primary school in her hometown of Oviedo.

The Queen was joined by the Minister of Education, Vocational Training and Sports, Milagros Tolón, for the official opening of the school year at Gesta Public School of Infant and Primary Education.

They were welcomed by the President of the Principality of Asturias, Adrián Barbón; the President of the General Assembly of the Principality of Asturias, Juan Cofiño; and the Government Delegate in the Principality of Asturias, Adriana Lastra, among others.

The Queen took a group photo with the students and received a tour of the school. Time was also spent meeting the School Council and representatives of the Parents’ Association.

She learned about the “Classroom of the Future – STEAM” event, visited a kindergarten and third-grade class, and was seen reading with some of the younger children. Her Majesty then spent time in the gym learning about the emotional well-being program “Gesta Inspira.” The program provides things like yoga and mindfulness as alternatives to traditional recess.

Queen Letizia was also able to talk to some of her former teachers and classmates to reminisce about her time at the school.

This wasn’t her first time returning to her old stomping grounds. In 2008, she and King Felipe visited the school to mark its 50th anniversary.
