The Princess of Asturias and Girona, and Infanta Sofía, visited the archaeological site of the Greek and Roman city of Empúries in L’Escala (Girona).

The two sisters visited the site, accompanied by participants in the Princess of Girona Foundation’s programs, in connection with the presentation of the Princess of Girona Awards 2026.

They were received by the director of the Archaeological Museum of Catalonia (MAC), Mónica Borrell, and by the head and coordinator of MAC-Empúries, Marta Santos.

The Princess and Infanta toured the ruins of the Greek city of Neapolis while learning more about its history, which is considered the most important Greco-Roman enclave on the Iberian Peninsula and the only one where the remains of a Greek city, Emporion, and a Roman city, Emporiae, coexist.

They visited the archaeological excavation site where students from the 80th Empúries archaeology course were working.

At the museum, the Princess and Infanta attended a screening of a video about the city’s transformation and toured the facilities.
