King Willem-Alexander and Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands attended the Four Freedoms Awards Ceremony in Middelburg.
The Four Freedoms Awards are presented each year to individuals or organisations. They were first named by Franklin D. Roosevelt in his speech to the United States Congress on January 6, 1941. The presentation of the awards was started by the Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt Institute in New York in 1950. The ancestors of President Roosevelt came from the province of Zeeland, which is why the awards are presented in Middelburg every even year.
The award for Freedom of Speech went to the Committee to Protect Journalists. The laureate of the award for Freedom of Religion cannot be disclosed for security reasons. The award for Freedom from Want goes to Isidora Uribe Silva from Chile. The Award for Freedom from Fear goes to Gisèle Pelicot.
The International Four Freedoms Award was awarded to President Zelenskyy and the Ukrainian people “in recognition of their leadership and their commitment to freedom, democracy, and the rule of law in Europe, under exceptionally difficult circumstances. ”
“Since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, the courageous Ukrainian people and their president have become a global symbol of resilience and the defence of fundamental freedoms, as articulated by President Roosevelt 85 years ago. President Zelenskyy’s visit to Middelburg is therefore of great significance. At a time when freedom and democracy are under pressure, his presence demonstrates how important it is to continue to stand firmly for them,” said Hugo de Jonge, chair of the Roosevelt Foundation.
King Willem-Alexander had a meeting with President Zelenskyy after the ceremony.
Today, our partnership with the Netherlands is becoming even deeper thanks to our agreements to launch work on the Drone Deal and on the first joint production specifically with the Netherlands.
I thank the Netherlands for all its support, for this visit, and for the Four… pic.twitter.com/xlgZAWG6sP
