King Harald’s remains taken to palace

King Harald’s coffin left the National Hospital this evening, en route to the Royal Palace. 

It was a very emotional day for many in Norway, and for those who follow the international royal families. The world lost King Harald V. A beloved figure that has carried the weight of the monarchy with humility in every step. One described it as Harald “dying with his crown on,” as His Majesty refused to abdicate as his health took its toll.

At 8:35am, on Friday 28 August, the Royal Court of Norway announced the death of King Harald who had reigned for 35 years as King.

It is with deep grief that we announce that His Majesty King Harald has passed away. King Harald died peacefully at Oslo University Hospital Rikshospitalet Friday 28 August at 6:35 AM.

The simple announcement sent the Kingdom into a period of national morning until the day of the state funeral, per the government. Various ceremonies and years of planning will now fall into place. At the National Hospital where the late King died, his body lie in the chapel awaiting a dignified transfer to the Royal Palace.

The Royal Procession containing the remains of the late King departed Rikshospitalet on Friday evening, accompanied by members of the Royal Family; King Haakon, Queen Mette-Marit, Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra, Queen Sonja, Prince Sverre Magnus and Princess Märtha Louise.

Members of the public lined the route from the hospital to the Palace, many with grief etched into their faces. King Harald was always at the top of favourability, his modern approach to the monarchy and openness made him the ‘grandfather of the nation’.

The Royal Family returned to the Royal Palace where King Harald’s remains will Lie-in-State with the public expected to pay their homage as well. The Royal Court will release details on all relevant ceremonies taking place. Oslo Police have already said they are ready for all aspects in the coming days with national period of mourning declared by the government.
