King Harald’s funeral details have been revealed.
The funeral will take place on Wednesday, 9 September.
King Harald’s coffin will leave the royal palace at noon local time. It will be taken in procession to Oslo Cathedral.
The coffin will be followed by King Haakon, Queen Mette-Marit, Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra, Prince Sverre Magnus and Princess Märtha Louise. Foreign royals and heads of state, prime ministers and representatives from the royal court will also take part in the procession.
The procession from the royal palace to Oslo Cathedral will parade in the following order:
- Mounted police
- Garden Signal Corps
- The Armed Forces Staff Music
- Garden flag with mourning flowers and flag guard
- Honorary Company (His Majesty the King’s Guard)
- Court Chief
- The coffin on a pall flanked by pallbearers (His Majesty the King’s Adjutant’s Staff)
- King Haakon, Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra, Prince Sverre Magnus and Princess Märtha Louise
- Queen Mette-Marit and Queen Sonja
- Foreign royalty
- President of the Storting, Prime Minister and Supreme Court Justice
- Visiting heads of state or their representatives
- The Government and the Government Council
- Presidency of the Storting
- Representatives of the Supreme Court
- The Speaker of the Sami Parliament and the President of the Sami Parliament
- State administrators and the governor of Svalbard
- Mayor of Oslo
- The Royal Court’s leadership
- Representatives of the Armed Forces leadership
- Mounted police
The funeral service will start at 1 pm. The ceremony will be led by Pres. Olav Fykse Tveit according to the rites of the Church of Norway. Oslo Bishop Sunniva Gylver will also contribute. Cathedral Cantor Marcus André Berg and the Oslo Cathedral Choir will arrange the church music.
At the start of the service, a minute of silence will be held throughout Norway; this will begin and end with three bells.
Memorial speeches will be held by the President of the Storting and the Prime Minister. Representatives of the different faiths will hold candlelight vigils.
After the funeral service, the coffin will be taken in procession to Akershus Castle Church. A private ceremony will take place for family and the royal guests. The President of the Storting, the Prime Minister, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, and the presidents of Iceland and Finland will also be present. The coffin will then be interred in the crypt, alongside the sarcophagi of King Haakon VII, Queen Maud, King Olav and Crown Princess Märtha.
The royal family will come into the courtyard at Akershus Fortress after the private service. The flags at half-mast will then be raised to their highest point, and a royal salute will be fired. The country’s church bells will then ring for one hour. Once the royal family is back at the royal palace, they will appear on the balcony.
Afterwards, King Haakon and Queen Mette-Marit will hold a reception at the palace.
