King Felipe and Queen Letizia attended the 50th anniversary celebrations of the newspaper El País.

The event took place at the Maritime Museum of Barcelona.

Upon arrival, they were greeted by the President of the Government of Catalonia, Salvador Illa, the Second Vice President of the Government and Minister of Labour and Social Economy, Yolanda Díaz, the Minister of Science and Innovation, as well as other authorities and representatives of the PRISA Group and the newspaper El País.

They were given a tour of the photographic exhibition “Moments”, which was organised for the occasion. In the main hall, actress Cristina Plazas gave a monologue called “My Story/The Story of EL PAÍS.” This was followed by speeches by the director of El País, Jan Martínez Ahrens, and the president of the Generalitat of Catalonia, Salvador Illa.

King Felipe also delivered a speech, in which he said the event served “to congratulate a vibrant newsroom that keeps the pulse of the news, with great professional effort on both sides of the Atlantic. A global newspaper with a liberal spirit, a pro-European vocation, and an Ibero-American perspective.”

Carola Ortiz provided the musical entertainment.
