Heartwarming tribute from Crown Princess Victoria to the King

Crown Princess Victoria paid a heartwarming tribute to her father, King Carl Gustaf, during the gala dinner for his 80th birthday.

The heir to the throne spoke of the things he has taught his children and how well he represents Sweden.

She began by remarking, “As king, he has dedicated his life to serving his country. As a father, he has given my siblings and me the gift of truly understanding what that service is: a great responsibility – but also a joy and an honour.”

Crown Princess Victoria took time out to praise the King, who seemed emotional, for his work for Sweden, “You are a constant, but constantly in motion. Completely in line with your motto: For Sweden – in time.”

Victoria also shared the most important thing she and her siblings have learned from the King, “But the most important thing you have conveyed to us – not so much in words as in action – is the respect and humility you have shown towards your mission. Serving Sweden has been, and is, not just your life’s work, but your calling.

“Together with Mom, you have shown my siblings and me every day, what it means to honour your mission.

“I will do everything I can to pass that understanding on to the next generation. The next link in the chain.”

The Crown Princess concluded by admitting that she knows her father does not think his 80th birthday is that special.

“If I know you correctly – and I think I do – you don’t think turning 80 is a big achievement. A hundred, maybe it’s worth a telegram. You’ve sent a few of those by now.

“But 80, is that something to celebrate? For a man with a packed calendar? But you know what, Dad, today you’ll just have to accept that we’re celebrating you. Because that’s what dads who turn 80 get to do. Regardless of whether they’re the King of Sweden or not.

Dear Dad: Congratulations!”
