In Luxembourg, the Octave is one of the major religious events of the year. It is celebrated in honour of the Virgin Mary, who is the patron saint of Luxembourg. It took place over two weeks in April and May. Pilgrims travel to Luxembourg City to visit the statue of the Virgin Mary in the Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Luxembourg before eating at the Mäertchen.

The end of the Octave is marked with a procession in which the statue is carried through the city. The Grand Duke and Grand Duchess attended the ceremony inside the cathedral.

Afterwards, the couple and their sons made an appearance on the balcony of the Grand Ducal Palace.
