The drama series about Queen Maxima of the Netherlands is set to premiere in April.
Videoland will begin airing the drama beginning on 20 April in a six-part series based on a book by Marcia Luyten.
Delfina Chaves will play Queen Maxima, while Martijn Lakemeier will portray King Willem-Alexander. The series will also star Elsie de Brauw as Princess Beatrix and Sebastian Koch as Prince Claus.
The show will revolve around then Maxima Zorreguieta’s early life in Argentina and younger years in New York. There will be a focus on Willem-Alexander’s proposal in 1999 and the scandal that followed regarding Maxima’s father, Jorge.
IMBD’s description of the show states: “Máxima Zorreguieta finds herself in the spotlight when she appears at the Dutch crown prince’s side, but by the moment Willem-Alexander asks her to marry him, the past catches up with her.”
Jorge served as the Secretary of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries during dictator General Jorge Rafael Videla’s regime. During this time, dubbed the Dirty War, around 30,000 people were either killed or disappeared. The Dutch government investigated and said that while Jorge did not directly participate in the activities, he had to have been aware they were occurring.
The union between Maxima and Willem-Alexander was approved, but Jorge was not allowed to attend his daughter’s wedding. Maxima’s mother, Maria, stayed home with her husband in solidarity.
Máxima Zorreguieta: Motherland was published in 2021, and filming of the show began in January 2023 in New York.
