A happy Queen Mary of Denmark has returned home with her husband for their first state visit to Australia since becoming king and queen.

After being welcomed by the Governor General of Australia, Sam Mostyn, on 15 March, the Australian-born consort said that it “feels special to return to the place where I was born.”

Speaking to Danish media, Mary spoke of returning to her home country, “To still be remembered is something that should never be taken for granted.”

King Frederik and Queen Mary also thanked Australia for their warm welcome, with Mary saying, “It does us good that Australians continue to remember us and carry us in their hearts and minds.”

Queen Mary was born as Mary Donaldson in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. She met then Crown Prince Frederik during the 2000 Summer Olympic Games in Sydney, and the pair married in 2004.

The Queen’s father and siblings continue to live in Australia.

The Danish state visit to Australia takes place from 14 to 19 March. The King and Queen’s eldest child, Crown Prince Christian, is currently Regent.
