King Frederik X of Denmark was born Frederik André Henrik Christian on 26 May 1968 during the reign of his grandfather, King Frederik IX. He became Crown Prince just four years later when his mother became Queen Margrethe II in 1972. His father was Prince Henrik of Denmark (d.2018), born Henri Marie Jean André de Laborde de Monpezat.
His brother Joachim was born in 1969.
Frederik was christened in Holmens Kirke in Copenhagen on 24 June 1968, and his confirmation followed in the Fredensborg Palace Chapel on 28 May 1981.
He attended the Krebs’ Skole between 1964 and 1981 and boarded at the École des Roches in France from 1982 until 1983. He graduated from the upper secondary school of Øregaard Gymnasium in 1986. He studied political science at the University of Aarhus and graduated with an MSc in 1995.
He also undertook a military education in the Queen’s Life Guard Regiment from 1986. He has continued his education over the years, becoming a first lieutenant of the reserve in the Navy in 1995, a lieutenant commander of the reserve in the Navy and a captain of the reserve in the Army in 1997. In 2000, he was appointed a captain of the reserve in the Air Force. In 2oo2, he was appointed as a mayor in the Army and the Air Force, as well as a commander in the Navy. He became a senior lecturer with the Institute of Strategy at the Royal Danish Defence College in 2003. In 2010, he was appointed as a commander in the Navy and colonel in the Army and the Air Force.
On 14 May 2004, Frederik married Mary Elizabeth Donaldson in Copenhagen Cathedral. They went on to have four children together: Christian (b. 2005), Isabella (b. 2007) and twins Vincent and Josephine (b. 2011).

As Crown Prince, Frederik held several patronages. He has a wide range of interests, such as sports, culture, sustainability and business.
On 14 January 2024, he succeeded as King upon the abdication of his mother, Queen Margrethe II.
