King Frederik and Queen Mary welcomed the President and First Lady of Vietnam this morning as the Vietnamese state visit to Denmark began.

The King and Queen of Denmark stared in Monday morning’s welcome for the President and First Lady of Vietnam, Mr Tô Lâm, accompanied by Mrs Ngô Phương Ly. The two countries have shared long-standing and friendly relations since Denmark, as one of the first Western countries, recognised North Vietnam in 1971. This year, Denmark and Vietnam celebrate the 55th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations, with the state visit marking historic bilateral ties and strengthened cooperation.

On Friday morning, the state visit officially kicked off with a small welcome ceremony outside Copenhagen Airport. King Frederik and Queen Mary received the presidential couple at the Vilhelm Lauritzen Terminal at Copenhagen Airport, where the King and President inspected the Royal Life Guards’ honour company following the playing of the national anthems.

Later that morning, the royal couple and the presidential couple arrived at Copenhagen’s Citadel for a ceremony honouring the fallen. After being jointly received by the Deputy Chief of Defence, Lieutenant General Henrik Berg, and the Commander in Copenhagen, Colonel Lars Nygaard, King Frederik and President Tô Lâm inspected the honour company, after which the presidential couple laid a wreath at the Monument at the Citadel. The Monument for Denmark’s International Efforts after 1948 was inaugurated in 2011 and honours Danes who have served in international missions.

The morning’s events concluded in carriages as the royal and presidential couples were escorted by the Guard Hussar Regiment’s Horse Squadron from the Citadel to Christian VII’s Palace at Amalienborg.

The royal couple and the presidential couple arrived at Christian VII’s Palace, where the King and the President inspected the company of honour in the Vestibule. The Danish Royal House notes that President Tô Lâm was awarded the Order of the Elephant by King Frederik, despite there being no traditional order exchange during the visit.

Tonight, the royal couple will host a state dinner at Christiansborg Palace in honour of the presidential couple.
