The King of Denmark, Frederik X, has addressed his people for the first time as their monarch.
Standing on the balcony of Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen, the King gave a short speech paying tribute to his mother, Queen Margrethe and his promises as their new king.
You can read His Majesty’s full remarks below:
“My mother, Her Majesty Queen Margrethe the 2nd, has ruled Denmark for 52 years. Through half a century, she has followed the times with our common heritage as a starting point.
“She will always be remembered as a regent beyond the ordinary. Like few, my mother has managed to be at one with her kingdom. Today, the throne passes on.
“My hope is to become a gathering king of tomorrow. It’s a task I’ve been craving all my life. It is a responsibility I take on with respect, pride and great joy. It is a deed I will make an effort to carry through the trust I encounter.
“I need all the support I can get. From my beloved wife, from my family, from you and from that which is greater than us. I face the future with the certainty that I am not alone. Bound, bound, for the Kingdom of Denmark.”
The King’s speech took place after Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen proclaimed him as the Danish monarch on the balcony.
An emotional King Frederik waved to his people and was later joined by his wife, Queen Mary and their four children: Crown Prince Christian, Princess Isabella, Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine.
