Marvel Studios is bringing its next superhero epic to royal grounds. According to a report in The Sun, the studio secured permission to film scenes for Avengers: Doomsday at Windsor Great Park, with a location fee reportedly in the multi-million-pound range.

The production is expected to involve around 300 cast and crew members on site this summer. While Marvel has not confirmed the details publicly, planning documents reviewed by The Sun reference two key sets: “Luke Cage’s House” and “Annie Reynolds’ House.” Cage, also known as Power Man, is a Marvel character with enhanced strength and durability. Reynolds appears to be a new character, possibly introduced as the mother of Sentry, another figure from the Marvel universe. Construction is already underway. A 1960s-style American home has been built on the grounds, believed to represent Cage’s residence.

Windsor Great Park is managed by the Crown Estate, which gives back 75% of its profits to the UK Treasury. The remaining 25% forms the Sovereign Grant, which funds the Royal Family’s official duties. King Charles, who serves as Ranger of the Park, reportedly was informed of the filming but is expected to be at Balmoral during production.

A source quoted by The Sun said, “Several million pounds is chicken feed to Marvel when their movies make billions. But the money will go to the upkeep of Windsor Great Park, so the King, of course, has a keen interest.” Another added, “Some of the profits of the Crown Estates make their way to the Royal Family, so it’s a win-win for everyone. The Royal Family may even be persuaded to pop by and have a look at Thor in action.”

The Royal Family has many ties to the film industry. King Charles is the patron of the British Film Institute and attended the premiere of Gladiator II last year. Prince William is currently the President of BAFTA, a role held since 2010. William and Catherine routinely attend the BAFTA Awards. In 2023, they visited the set of The Rings of Power with Prince George and Princess Charlotte. Princess Kate has also revealed that Prince Louis’s favourite superhero is Spider-Man.

A spokesperson for the Crown Estate declined to comment on the filming.
