King Charles III has paid tribute to those who took part in the landings on D-Day.
The King was joined in Portsmouth by his wife, Queen Camilla, and his son, the Prince of Wales. Portsmouth was one of the departure points in June 1944. He said, “We are eternally in their debt.” He also spoke of their “courage, resilience and solidarity.”
Queen Camilla was seen with tears in her eyes during the speeches.
The Prince of Wales read from the diary of Captain Alastair Bannerman as he remembered heading to France that morning. The Captain survived the war.
