King Philippe of the Belgians has spoken of the “driving force of hope” during his Christmas Eve address.
Reflecting on another tumultuous year in the world, the King spoke of the wars and conflicts in Ukraine, Sudan and the Middle East.
He said his thoughts were with all victims of terrorism and that the world “must do everything we can to ensure that people around the world can live in peace.”
His Majesty stressed the importance of Belgium being a country with different cultures and praised organisations he and Queen Mathilde have visited and supported with migrants. He decried racism and violence, saying they create “fear and creates a sense of anxiety and powerlessness in the face of an uncertain future.”
The King of the Belgians then turned to the power of hope.
“This is neither naive nor passive optimism. On the contrary, hope is an energy that we find deep within ourselves, and that is revealed in contact with those who are concretely committed to a better world. And when we get involved ourselves, that hope grows even more,” he said.
His Majesty also touched on how children and grandchildren help provide hope for the future and said that each person should do their best to “contribute to positive change that brings people together and allows us to face the future realistically and without fear.”
King Philippe then concluded his speech with Christmas and New Year wishes to the Belgian people.
