King Philippe of the Belgians attended a ceremony to commemorate the liberation of Pilsen, Czech Republic.

The King was in the Czech Republic to mark 80 years since Pilsen was liberated from the Nazis by Allied forces.

American and Belgian soldiers were instrumental in driving the Nazis out of the city on 6 May 1945. Two days later, the Third Reich fell.

During the commemoration, the King said: “The immense courage of these American, Belgian and Czech soldiers will never be forgotten.”

His Majesty and Czech President Petr Pavel unveiled a plaque during the ceremony to mark the anniversary.

This was the first time the heads of state of Belgium and the Czech Republic attended a liberation commemoration ceremony together.

Afterwards, the King met American and Czech veterans, as well as the families of Belgian veterans.
