The King and Queen of the Belgians have continued their pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela in Spain.

King Philippe and Queen Mathilde completed the Galicia portion of the trek this past week.

Their Majesties began the pilgrimage in 2017 and have completed different parts of the walk each year. They have spent many of their Easter holidays partaking in the hikes.

The King and Queen began the pilgrimage in Navarra, Spain, and walked through La Rioja in 2018. In 2019, they walked between Burgos and Palencia. The pandemic forced them to pause their yearly hikes, but they resumed the hikes in 2022 through Tierra de Campos. In 2023, they walked through the Spanish province of León.

The Pilgrimage of Compostela (Camino de Santiago or Way of St James) is a pilgrimage to the shrine of the Apostle James, held in the Santiago de Compostela in northwestern Spain. It attracts around 200,000 pilgrims yearly with paths in France, Portugal and Spain.

It is said that the remains of the disciple are buried in the Galician cathedral. James was one of Jesus Christ’s Twelve Apostles and is the patron saint of Spain.
