The funeral for Japan’s Princess Yuriko has been held in Tokyo.
The Princess was laid to rest at the Toshimagaoka Imperial Cemetery in Tokyo on 25 November with the Imperial Family in attendance.
The Shinto ceremony of Renso-no-Gi took place at the cemetery on Monday with Yuriko’s granddaughter, Princess Akiko, serving as chief mourner.
A wake had taken place on Sunday.
Crown Prince Fumihito, Crown Princess Kiko, Princess Kako and Princess Aiko (the latter of whom is the daughter of the Emperor) attended the ceremony alongside the Prime Minister and government officials. In total, 500 people attended the funeral.
According to Japanese media, Emperor Naruhito, Empress Masako, Emperor Emeritus Akihito and Empress Michiko did not attend in line with tradition.
The Princess was cremated in the afternoon and her ashes were interred alongside her husband, Prince Mikasa, at the Toshimagaoka Imperial Cemetery.
Princess Yuriko died on 5 November 2024 at 101, making her the oldest member of the Imperial Family at that time. She was the last surviving great-aunt of Emperor Naruhito.
