Prince Hitachi of Japan has made a very rare appearance at an engagement in Tokyo.
Prince Hitachi made a rare and welcome appearance in Tokyo last month. Prince Hitachi — Emperor Naruhito’s uncle and brother of Emperor Emeritus Akihito — held a joint meeting with his wife, Princess Hitachi (Hanako), at their residence last month.
On 15 September, the Prince and Princess held a meeting of new members of the Imperial Guard at their residence in Higashi, Shibuya Ward. The Imperial Household Agency released a photograph of the meeting as part of a recap of last month’s activities.

The meeting in Tokyo is believed to be Prince Hitachi’s only engagement so far this year, as the 90-year-old can no longer keep up with the full schedule he maintained in years past. Prince Hitachi began gradually withdrawing from public events in March 2024, when he attended an event hosted by the Japan Institute of Invention and Innovation, of which he is president, as The Yomiuri Shimbun noted.
Prince Hitachi was a long-time cancer research scientist, graduating from Gakushuin University in 1958 and later pursuing a postgraduate degree in zoology and cell biology at the University of Tokyo. He married Hanako Tsugaru in September 1964 at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo. Though the couple has no children, they have both devoted themselves to the country, supporting causes ranging from science and culture to social welfare.
The Prince is currently third in line of succession for the Chrysanthemum Throne.
