Prince Abdul Mateen and Princess Anisha have shared the name of their baby daughter.

It was announced last week that Princess Anisha, wife of Brunei’s Prince Abdul Mateen, had given birth to a healthy baby girl. The Office of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah noted a gun salute was also fired at the Istana Nurul Iman in celebration.

On Wednesday, 11th February, the couple took to Instagram to formally announce the name of the world’s newest Princess.

Zahra Mariam Bolkiah. Anisha & I are so grateful to the incredible team at JPMC for their exceptional care and support, and so thankful to everyone for the kind wishes.

The two lovely photographs shared on social media on Wednesday show the Prince and Princess with their bundle of joy, taken in what appears to be their home.

The Princess’s full name and title are “Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Anak Zahra Mariam Bolkiah”. ‘Yang Amat Mulia’ can be translated to ‘His/Her Royal Highness’. ‘Pengiran Anak’ distinguishes a royal baby as coming from the direct male line of the House of Bolkiah.

Princess Zahra Mariam is the sixth grandchild of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei, but she will not be in the line of succession. This is due to the country’s agnatic primogeniture. The muslim majority country follows a male-only succession, barring women.

The name Zahra, with an Arabic origin, means ‘bright’, ‘brilliance’, and ‘radiance’. It is sometimes believed to come from the Hebrew name ‘Sarah/שָׂרָה’, meaning princess. The baby’s middle name, Mariam, may certainly be in tribute to both Prince Abdul Mateen’s mother, Mariam Abdul Aziz (former wife of the Sultan), and Princess Anisha’s mother, Siti Mariam Isa.

Prince Abdul Mateen, 34, and Princess Anisha, 31, announced their engagement in October 2023. The Prince and Princess then held a ten-day lavish wedding ceremony in Bandar Seri Begawan in January 2024. The ceremonies were attended by members of the royal families, including the King and Queen of Bhutan.

Today, the couple carry out various royal duties supporting Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah and the Bruneian royal family.

The Instagram post on Wednesday also revealed that Princess Anisha had given birth at Jerudong Park Medical Centre (JPMC) in the capital of Brunei Darussalam. The private hospital is where Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei, 79, recently underwent a total right knee replacement on Sunday, 18th January.
