Norwegian royal family to resume duties

As royal court mourning ends on 9 October, the Norwegian royal family will gradually begin their official programme following the death of King Harald and the accession of King Haakon.

It’s been about 40 days since King Harald’s death. As with most monarchies, the throne passes to the next in line immediately after the previous sovereign’s death. We saw the Norwegian people flock to the Palace Square in sorrowful remembrance and line the streets as King Harald’s coffin was processed through Oslo.

After concluding the ceremonies, the royal family returned to the palace and appeared on the balcony, signalling the end of national mourning. However, court mourning, which is the mourning period observed by members of the family and royal court, continues until Friday, 9 October. This afternoon, the royal court released details as the official programme gradually opens up.

In addition to the constitutional duties and regular programme items, King Haakon VIII will conduct visits within important societal areas such as democracy, nature and environment, business, defence and inclusion in the coming period. The King will also invite groups from different strata of society to meetings throughout the autumn and winter.

Unfortunately for those who enjoy tiaras with pomp and ceremony, there will be no major official trips or state visits during the autumn and winter. Additionally, work on changes resulting from the accession means that some time will be spent on internal processes in the time ahead.

Queen Mette-Marit is still in rehabilitation after her lung transplant, the royal court says. The Queen will initially have no official engagements until next summer.

Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra will continue to prioritise her studies and will participate in some official occasions until she returns to Australia to start her studies in February.

Queen Sonja will continue to carry out official assignments where she represents the royal house.

The Royal News Organisation will bring you the latest updates as the new reign unfolds under King Haakon VIII.
