Prince Daniel of Sweden opened an exhibit at a Madrid museum on 7 October.

The Prince travelled to the Spanish capital to open a Swedish exhibition at the Prado Museum.

Prince Daniel reopened the exhibit featuring Queen Kristina’s art collection and received a tour of the art on display.

As part of the opening, Daniel gave a speech in English, where he said, “Imagine a young queen from the far north arriving in Rome in the seventeenth century. Imagine a passion for art and culture so great that it would leave a mark on Europe that we can still see today.”

“These sculptures connect Sweden and Spain. They connect generations. And they connect the past with the future. That was true in Queen Kristina’s time, and it is just as true today,” he later added.

He also reflected on his daughter, Princess Estelle’s love of art and the sculpture part bearing her name in Stockholm:

“In fact, that same belief in the power of art lives on in Sweden and the Royal Family. My daughter, Princess Estelle, has a sculpture park on Royal Djurgården in the heart of Stockholm through the Princess Estelle Cultural Foundation. It currently includes seven permanent sculptures, with a new sculpture added each year.”

Later, Prince Daniel spoke to high school students who are taking part in the “Innovate like a Queen” workshop at the museum.

Queen Kristina of Sweden abdicated in 1654 and moved to Rome, where she accumulated a large art collection. The Spanish Royal Family purchased several pieces from her sculpture collection after her death. Eventually, they went on display at the Prado Museum.
