King Vajiralongkorn and Queen Suthida were officially welcomed to Vietnam yesterday morning by President Tô Lâm and his spouse at the National Assembly.
After their earlier momentous touchdown — the King and Queen flew into a rainy international airport — King Vajiralongkorn and Queen Suthida were received in an official welcoming ceremony at Hanoi’s National Assembly. The diplomatic welcome kicked off the official programme of the Thai state visit to Vietnam, which celebrates the two countries’ Golden Anniversary of diplomatic relations (50 years).
This morning, at the National Assembly, Party General Secretary and President of the Senate Tô Lâm, accompanied by his wife, Ngô Thị Phương Ly, warmly welcomed the royal couple to the capital alongside local schoolchildren waving Thai and Vietnamese flags. Those in attendance also included Politburo members, the Vietnamese Ambassador to Thailand, and Ambassadors and Chargés d’Affaires of ASEAN countries in Vietnam.
After the King and Queen were received, a military band played the two national anthems while a 21-gun salute was fired outside.
The delegations then exchanged greetings, followed by bilateral talks between the two heads of state.
The state visit to Vietnam is the first by a reigning Thai monarch and coincides with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Party General Secretary and President of the Senate, Tô Lâm, accompanied by his wife, Ngô Thị Phương Ly, will host a state banquet in honour of Their Majesties’ visit later this evening at Tonkin Palace, followed by cultural performances at Ngoc Son Temple.
