Infanta Sofía of Spain gave her first public speech as part of activities organised around the Ibercaja Foundation’s 150th anniversary.

The Infanta was joined by her parents, King Felipe and Queen Letizia, and older sister, Princess Leonor, for the events.

First, the Infanta visited the Ibercaja Foundation Campus and attended workshops centred on “Create Your Own Constellation.” She later heard about the projects of the foundation and spoke to teachers before attending a comprehensive health education workshop led by psychiatrist Javier García.

Sofía was joined by Leonor in the 3D Room for the sustainability workshop “The impact of the invisible in the classrooms” at the Cogullada Monastery.

By the afternoon, it was time for the Infanta’s special moment. She presided over the presentation of the first “Leading Teachers” grants from the Ibercaja Foundation. Five teachers were recognised for their work in educational leadership, sustainability, inclusion, educational research and comprehensive health education.

This also marked the royal’s first appearance since becoming honorary president of the “Leading Teachers” initiative.

After a video presentation and remarks from Amado Franco, president of the Ibercaja Foundation, Infanta Sofía presented the grants to Cristian Ruiz Reinales, Belén María Mesas Sánchez, Clement Córdoba Vila, Mercedes Carpintero Gómez and Diego Olivar Aldudo.

Her Royal Highness praised teachers and the work they do. She said, in part, “many of us believe that yours is one of the best professions in the world, one that should be valued much more, that carries great responsibility, and that sows seeds of hope today. And for that reason, it deserves respect, resources, and full recognition. These grants, this teaching community that is embarking on this journey today, are proof of that. And for that reason, I am grateful that you have welcomed me so that my first public appearance can be part of this journey. Thank you very much.”

Casa Real explained that the new initiative was launched to identify, showcase, and recognise “education professionals for their work in improving the education system.”
