King Felipe and Queen Letizia mark 25th anniversary of El Confidencial

King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain have presided over the 25th anniversary celebration of the founding of the El Confidencial newspaper.

Upon arrival, the King and Queen were received by the President of the Constitutional Court, Cándido Conde-Pumpido; the President of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso; the Minister of Defence, Margarita Robles; the Mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez-Almeida; the President of El Confidencial, José Antonio Sánchez García; and the newspaper’s director, Ignacio Cardero.

In the Felipe IV Hall, they received greetings from various authorities and dignitaries, including former Prime Minister Felipe González; the acting President of the Regional Government of Andalusia, Juan Manuel Moreno; the President of Castilla-La Mancha, Emilio García-Page; the President of the Region of Murcia, Fernando López Miras; the President of Aragon, Jorge Azcón; the President of the Regional Government of Castilla y León, Alfonso Fernández Mañueco; and the Leader of the Opposition, Alberto Núñez Feijóo.

Journalist and writer Marta García Aller hosted the celebrations. King Felipe and Queen Letizia also presented the El Confidencial Investigative Journalism Awards. The National Award was given to La Marea and accepted by its director, Magdalena Bandera, for its report on the surrogacy industry in Spain. The International Award was given to Aristegui Noticias, and was accepted by its founder, Carmen Aristegui, for the Televisa Leaks investigation. The Lifetime Achievement Award was given to Dean P. Baquet, the former executive director of The New York Times and winner of the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service.

King Felipe addressed the attendees, saying: “To all the award winners, and on behalf of Queen Letizia, our sincerest congratulations. And we also extend our congratulations, on this anniversary, to all the men and women who make up the ‘El Confidencial’ team. Remember that each of you is a different age, but the most important thing is that together you have just celebrated 25 years. And that means you have a whole future ahead of you.”
