It’s Eton for Prince George! Kensington Palace confirms the future King will follow in the footsteps of his father.
It’s a decision that has been years in the planning. For the Prince and Princess of Wales, the couple has chosen a school within a practical walking distance of their home for the eldest of their three children. Prince George (12) will attend Eton College from this September, Kensington Palace announced earlier today.
The future King will follow in the footsteps of his father, Prince William, who attended the historic 587-year institution from 1995 to 2000. William frequently walked to Windsor for afternoon tea with the late Queen Elizabeth, where the sovereign offered her wisdom and lessons on the monarchy, and was a sounding board for the young Prince as he grew up. During an interview marking his 18th birthday, Prince William gave an interview and was asked if he enjoyed his time at Eton, to which the Prince responded, “Yes, very much. I’ll miss my friends and Dr Gailey [Housemaster], who has been a tremendous support to me. And I’ve really enjoyed being able to go about Eton as just another student.”
This autumn, George, who turns 13 next month, will finish his final term at Lambrook School, where the Prince, who is an occasional boarder, has been since September 2022. It was the Cambridge children’s first day of Lambrook when, on 8th September, Queen Elizabeth II died at Balmoral Castle in Scotland.
While speculation was rampant in the run-up to this summer’s decision, as William and Catherine were seen visiting various schools across the country, it was evident where George would end up: one royal source said, “It’s the natural choice, always has been.” Amongst those believed to have been under consideration was Marlborough College, where his mother, the Princess of Wales, attended.
Prince George will be given his own room in a “house” with around 55 other boys. Eton starts for those aged 13 and up who are cared for and looked after by a Housemaster and Dame. The prestigious school, one of the oldest and most renowned in England, enrols around 1,350 students and has long been the alma mater of many of the country’s elite, educating 20 British prime ministers, with fees of around £63,000 a year.
