Princess Viktória visits newcomer school

Princess Viktória de Bourbon de Parme, daughter-in-law of Princess Irene of the Netherlands, has visited the newcomer school Taalklas Lelystad during Mental Health Week.

As the royal patron of Save the Children, she wishes to highlight the mental health of children with a refugee background. These children are at a much higher risk of PTSD and anxiety disorders, but are less likely to be able to reach the appropriate mental health care. Children who are supported in their development will be more likely to participate fully in society. TeamUp contributes to their development.

Princess Viktória joined a TeamUp session and spoke with students and teachers. She gained insight into the impact of war trauma.

She said, “Every child must be able to feel safe and have the opportunity to develop. Children who have experienced war and flight often carry invisible scars. That is why it is so important to help these children now, so that they regain perspective and confidence in the future.”

There are quite a few concerns regarding the mental health of children with a refugee background. Almost 20,000 children are waiting in asylum centres, which can be harmful to their mental health. They are also more likely to experience discrimination and exclusion.

“A child who is constantly in survival mode does not get around to learning, playing, or integrating,” says Merel Groen, project leader of TeamUp op School. “If we help children process their stress, space is created again for them to develop. The sooner that help is available, the better it is for the child and for society.”
