The Aga Khan V will undertake an official visit to Canada next month.
His Highness the Aga Khan V, Prince Rahim al-Hussaini, will pay an official visit to Canada from Wednesday, 25th to Tuesday, 31st March 2026. The visit comes at the invitation of the Prime Minister, Mark Carney.
The announcement over the weekend stated that the Aga Khan will visit Jamat [a community of Ismaili Muslims] in Ontario, Quebec, and the Maritime Provinces. Also noting that His Highness will conduct a further Canadian visit—”in the near future”—to meet with other members of the Shia Nizari Isma’ili Muslim community.
Prince Rahim’s father, Prince Karim Al-Hussaini (Aga Khan IV), held a personal connection with the Realm of the United Kingdom. The late Aga Khan founded many institutions and centres within the Canadian borders, namely the Global Centre for Pluralism in Ottawa, as well as the Aga Khan Museum and Ismaili Centre in Toronto. Canada described Prince Karim as “one of the world’s great philanthropists.”
Prince Rahim Al-Hussaini ascended as the 50th Hereditary Ismaili Imam (Mawlana Hazar Imam/Aga Khan) on the 4th February, 2025. The Ismaili Imamat is a “hereditary office in succession from the first Shia Imam, Hazrat Ali, the cousin and son-in-law of Prophet Muhammad”, per the Ismaili.
Prince Rahim was named the new Aga Khan with the previous Imam—Prince Karim—naming his successor in his will as per tradition.
The global Shia Nizari Isma’ili Muslim community has an estimated following of around 12-15 million.
The Aga Khan most recently undertook an official visit to the United Kingdom in early February 2026 in connection with the first anniversary of his accession. The spiritual leader was hosted for a dinner by King Charles at Windsor, as well as the Prince of Wales, for discussions the following day.
