New British passports with the coat of arms of King Charles have gone into circulation, which begs the question: Does King Charles have a passport?
The short and simple answer is no.
As the passports are issued in the monarch’s name, the monarch does not carry a passport.
The following inscription is on each British passport: “His Britannic Majesty’s Secretary of State requests and requires in the name of His Majesty all those whom it may concern to allow the bearer to pass freely without let or hindrance and to afford the bearer such assistance and protection as may be necessary.”
While the King does not hold a passport, other members of the Royal Family do, including Queen Camilla, the Prince of Wales, the Duke of Sussex, Princess Royal and Princess of Wales.
Just because King Charles does not currently hold a passport, that doesn’t mean he has never had one. When he was the heir to the throne while his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, was on the throne, he had a British passport. It was not until he took the throne that he was exempt from having a passport to travel.
