In the annual NRK programme “Year with the Royal Family,” the Norwegian royals have spoken about the case against Marius Borg Høiby.

While the family has been primarily silent on the matter since Høiby’s arrest, they addressed the charges against Crown Princess Mette-Marit’s son in the programme that aired on Christmas Day.

Speaking publicly for the first time, King Harald and Queen Sonja expressed condolences to all those involved with the King, saying, “I don’t think you can prepare for this. It’s now in the court’s hands, and the trial has been scheduled. We’ll take it as it comes.

“At the same time, I want to say that we sympathise with everyone involved. Not only in our own family, but also with everyone else involved. We sympathise with them and hope they are doing well and that things will improve for them after the trial.”

Queen Sonja added, “That’s absolutely right. It’s important to think of everyone in this situation.”

The Crown Princess addressed the accusations directed at her regarding her son. Norwegian media outlets reported she allegedly contacted victims and warned her son he was about to be arrested. She vehemently denied the reports.

She said, “I find it quite difficult to be accused of serious things, which I obviously didn’t do. What perhaps saddens me most is that we’re being criticised for how we handled it as parents. That we didn’t take it seriously. I find that difficult.”

In August, it was announced that he was to be prosecuted on 23 counts. This includes four rapes of four different women and abuse in a close relationship concerning his former partner, Nora Haukland. He will also be charged with making death threats, assaulting a public official and violating the Road Traffic Act.

In total, he was prosecuted for one case of rape with intercourse, two instances of rape without intercourse, four cases of sexually offensive behaviour, one case of abuse in close relationships, two cases of bodily harm, one case of malicious damage, one case of threats, five violations of restraining order, one case of molestation by a police officer and five road traffic offences.

It is believed the trial will begin early in 2026. He was initially arrested in autumn 2024.
