Sweden’s King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia are in New York for meetings surrounding the United Nations General Assembly.

The King and Queen met with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres on the sidelines of the General Assembly at the UN Headquarters.

Afterwards, Their Majesties were joined by the Secretary General and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Maria Malmer Stenergard, for the annual wreath laying ceremony at the Dag Hammarskjöld Memorial Site. Swedish Hammarskjöld was the second UN secretary general who died in a plane crash in 1961.

During the ceremony, the King praised Dag Hammarskjöld as “a man of vision and courage.”

Both His Majesty and the Secretary General laid wreaths during the event.

A tour of the UN Headquarters was next on the list, with King Carl Gustaf laying flowers at the bust of his great-uncle and godfather, Count Folke Bernadotte, who served as the United Nations Security Council mediator in the Arab–Israeli conflict from 1947 to 1948. He was assassinated in Jerusalem in 1948.

In the evening, they attended a meeting with Annalena Baerbock, the President of the General Assembly.
