Princess Lalla Asmaa of Morocco and the First Lady of Rwanda, Mrs Jeannette Kagame, have opened a Hearing Diagnostic and Rehabilitation Centre in Kigali.

The new Hearing Diagnostic and Rehabilitation Centre is the first of its kind in Rwanda, and it is part of the fifth phase of the foundation’s “United, We Hear Better” program.  Rwanda has become the 23rd country to join the program, which is active across Africa, the Middle East and Latin America.  It is an extension of the national “Nasmaa” campaign beyond Morocco.

Princess Lalla Asmaa and Mrs Jeannette Kagame visited Rwanda’s Military Referral and Teaching Hospital in Kigali to meet four Rwandan children who underwent surgery as part of the new program.  The foundation is committed to supporting patients beyond surgery with continued medical and educational assistance.

They then went on to open the Hearing Diagnostic and Rehabilitation Centre, which was founded with donations and equipment donated by Princess Lalla Asmaa and the foundation.

The centre includes ear, nose, and throat specialists, audiologists, speech-language therapists, and psychologists.  It will enable doctors to diagnose hearing impairments early in infancy, which is a critical period for language development.

During the fifth phase of the program, the program will provide cochlear implants to 50 patients and hearing aids to another 56.
