King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, was hospitalised in Riyadh for medical examinations, the Royal Court announced on Friday.

The 90-year-old monarch was last seen on Tuesday chairing a Cabinet Meeting, according to State media.

This is not the first time the King of the world’s largest crude oil exporter has been hospitalised. The King has been treated by doctors on numerous occasions, including in late 2024 for lung inflammation, a week-long stay for a colonoscopy in 2022, and gallbladder removal surgery in 2020. Salman bin Abdulaziz was also fitted with a pacemaker.

A statement from the Saudi Royal Court reads:

“The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques—may Allah preserve him—is undergoing medical examinations today, Friday, 27 Rajab 1447 AH corresponding to 16 January 2026 AD, at King Faisal Specialist Hospital in Riyadh.

May Allah preserve the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and grant him health and well-being”

No further information was released on the state of the King’s visit this Friday.

King Salman bin Abdulaziz, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, acceded as head of the House of Saud in January 2015 following the death of the widely regarded King Abdullah (1924—2015). The current successor to King Salman is Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, 40, also known by his moniker ‘MbS’.
