King Mohammed VI of Morocco has appointed the first female Prime Minister in the history of Morocco.
King Mohammed appointed Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri as Head of Government and tasked her with forming a new government. She is the third woman to serve as prime minister in an Arabic country.
Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri said in a televised statement, “For the first time in our country’s history, a woman is taking on the responsibility of leading the government.”
Her party, the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM), won the most votes in last week’s elections and secured 97 of the 395 seats in the House of Representatives. However, they did not reach the 198 seats needed for an outright majority, and a coalition will need to be formed.
