King Hassan II of Morocco died on 23 July 1999 after reigning for 28 years. The official commemoration is held according to the Islamic (Hijri) calendar. This year, it falls on 21 September, which corresponds to 9 Rabii II 1448 in the Islamic calendar. King Hassan was the father of King Mohammed VI, Prince Moulay Rachid, and Princesses Lalla Meryem, Lalla Asmaa, and Lalla Hasna. King Hassan was married on 9 November 1961 to Lalla Latifa Amahzoune, who survived him for 25 years.
