Spain’s line of succession is governed by male-preference primogeniture, meaning the eldest son will inherit the throne over an elder sister. But who is in the Spanish line of succession?

There are only ten people in Spain’s line of succession – all of whom are direct descendants of King Juan Carlos based on the 1978 Constitution of Spain.

Below is who is eligible to succeed King Felipe:

  1. The Princess of Asturias, Leonor (b. 2005) – daughter of the King
  2. Infanta Sofía (b. 2007) – daughter of the King
  3. Infanta Elena (b. 1963) – sister of the King
  4. Felipe de Marichalar y Borbón (b. 1998) – nephew of the King
  5. Victoria de Marichalar y Borbón (b. 2000) – niece of the King
  6. Infanta Cristina (b. 1965) – sister of the King
  7. Juan Urdangarin y Borbón (b. 1999) – nephew of the King
  8. Pablo Urdangarin y Borbón (b. 2000) – nephew of the King
  9. Miguel Urdangarin y Borbón (b. 2002) – nephew of the King
  10. Irene Urdangarin y Borbón (b. 2005) – niece of the King
